Chapter 7
Ruby and Nessa stayed a little while longer at Ted’s place. Ruby picked up some flyers about the history shop on the way out and said, “Ted, do you want me to deliver some of these?”
“Oh, don’t go out of your way. If people want to visit me, they know where to find me.”
Ruby waved the flyers at him. “Not everyone knows about your wonderful place. I’ll post some on the way home.”
Nessa grabbed some. “I’ll post some too. See ya.”
As they walked away from the local history shop, Nessa said, “What are we going to do now? How are we going to find out more about this Mary Jackson person? Do we have to go and see her again? I can’t believe that I saw a ghost. Can I have one of those hidden camera things too?”
“One thing at a time. We can find out more about Mary from the local parish records.”
Nessa pulled a face. “Don’t tell me we have to go into a church. I thought you were saving me from all that religious stuff.”
“It’s where they keep records of local people. If we’re lucky, we might find out when Mary was born. And we might find out if she got married and had children.” Ruby headed towards the car park. She pointed her key fob at her car and pressed a button. There was a click as the doors unlocked. “You don’t have to come with me, Nessa.”
“Stop trying to get rid of me. I’m curious now. I want to know what’s going on. Why don’t they have parish records online?” She opened the passenger door and got in.
Ruby climbed into the driver’s seat and said, “Someone has to physically put them online, and I don’t think this parish has enough staff to do that.” She started the engine. “You’ll get to meet Reverend Goodwin.”
Nessa tutted and folded her arms. “I’ve met enough reverends in my time, ta very much. I don’t need to meet another.” She looked around the car. “Have you got any hidden cameras in here?”
Ruby shook her head. She smiled to herself as they drove away. It was good to have someone at her side.
They soon arrived at Reverend Goodwin’s church. Ruby switched the engine off and said to Nessa, “He knows I can see ghosts too. I tried to keep it from him, but he has these piercing eyes that look right into your soul. I think he uses them on people so that they confess their sins, or to get them to donate more money to the church funds.”
“That won’t work on me,” Nessa informed her. She shivered. “I hate going inside churches. I’ve spent too much time in them already. Let’s be quick in here.”
Ruby got out of the car and made her way down the path to the church. She heard Nessa shuffling behind her. Ruby opened the door to the church and stepped in. This church always smelt of flowers and polish. It was a comforting smell, and it reminded her of home.
